What is facial recognition software?

How does facial recognition work?
Facial recognition consists of five basic processes:
Software detects a face, either in an image or in a video.
It determines coordinates of captured image using mainly pupil reference points and, from geometrical transformations, skew the image for extraction of biometric features.
Extraction of biometric features
It takes relevant characteristics, called minutiae, which will allow differentiating faces of different people, according to geometric variations.
It compares extracted characteristics with data stored in face database. Software performs a one-to-many comparison (1:N). It shows results from comparison with a percentage similarity.
If image has a high percentage of similarity, it is a match. For example, on an access control platform, only identified person can enter a restricted area.
